Joulukuussa siis nähtäneen kaksi suomalaista junioria f1-auton puikoissa. Kovalaisen kohdalla tätä on jo tovin odotettukin. Heikin oma kilpailukausi päättyy muuten tuota testiä edeltävänä viikonloppuna, kun Formula Nissan sarjan viimeiset lähdöt ajetaan Jaramassa.Renault to try out youngsters
Barcelona outing for Kovalainen and Lopez
Lopez has ruled in Renault V6 this year
The Renault team has announced plans to give Heikki Kovalainen and Jose Maria Lopez their first Formula 1 runs in December.
The pair, who raced in the Dallara Nissan and Formula Renault V6 Eurocup respectively this season, are both part of the Renault Driver Development (RDD) scheme. The test will go ahead from 2-4 December at the Barcelona circuit.
Kovalainen said: “The RDD gave me the opportunity to get into British F3 last year, then into the World Series, and now I have the chance to test an F1 car.
“I think I am capable of doing a good job in an F1 car, but if there are no opportunities for 2004, then I would like to stay in the Nissan championship and win it next year.
“Of course, the RDD will decide on what the next steps are, and I am fully confident they know what's best for me.”
Kovalainen lies third in Dallara Nissan with one round remaining, whilst Argentinian Lopez was crowned champion in Renault V6.
“It's important to look at the future and assess the rising stars who may drive for us in years to come,” said Renault Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds. “With any young driver, you are looking for consistency and a mature approach from their first drive.”
