supersonic69, sehän oli se tekaistu selitys miksi Ferrari haki kieltoa tälle. Tässä vähän totuutta autosport lehdestä berrylium tarinasta englanniksi:

Autocar 9 September 1998
"A row is brewing behind the F1 scenes after Ferrari attempted to get a
ban imposed on the use of the exotic aluminium beryllium which,
Ferrari claims, has carcinogenic qualities which make it unsafe to be
handled in a racing application. It is believed that such a ban would
effectively force Mercedes to scrap its current Fl engine, which is
believed to use aluminium beryllium cylinder liners. Yet at the same
time Ferrari has been attempting to obtain exclusive supplies of
aluminium beryllium without the other F1 teams knowing.
"

Race Tech September 1998
'Mosley dismissed rumours that the FIA was going to ban the use of
beryllium or other exotic materials in the interest of curtailing engine
development costs.'
"Some Formula One engine designers have expressed concerns at the cost
of this technology. However, Mosley says that there is no plan to ban
such parts provided that the FIA is satisfied that they pose no health
risk."

Autocar 30 September 1998
There was a meeting of F1 engine suppliers and the FIA at Monza where it
was confirmed that Aluminium Beryllium can continue to be used (in
engines) as the health risks are small.

F1 news 5 Jan 1999
The use of the controversial metal beryllium will be banned in F1 from
2000. The material has been the subject of a row between Ferrari and
Mercedes this season and now an F1 rules think-tank has voted to ban it
at the end of 1999. Mercedes uses the alloy aluminium beryllium to
reduce friction in cylinder linings, but Ferrari protested because
exposure to small particles can lead to a lung disease.
"In a world that is doing the best for ecology, F1 shouldn't give a bad
example," said Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo."

Autosport: Jan 1999
The Italian team won its battle to have beryllium banned from F1, but
Williams says its arguments do not stand up. Ferrari said that
beryllium is toxic when it is inhaled in particle form and that it
should be banned on the grounds of it being a health risk and an
unnecessary expense. Many thought that the team made the move because
rival Mercedes was using the friction-reducing material in the cylinder
heads of its engines and Ferrari wanted to reduce their advantage.
Williams, who admitted that his team had wanted to Use beryllium in a
new transmission, said, 'I can list you the components of an F1 car that
are more poisonous than beryllium: resins, compounds, carbon-fibre
dust. To say it should be banned on safety grounds is simply hypocrisy.

Sonntag Aktuell Feb 1999
Trouble between Ferrari and McLaren and the reason is the material
Beryllium. The British team's Mercedes engine contains alloys of
this very light and very hard metal. That's what gets Ferrari
team manager Jean Todt so excited. "Beryllium is injurious to
health". Metal researcher Frank Müklich disagrees. "Only
particles and steam of Beryllium and it's alloys are dangerous".
Beryllium is used in the AeroSpace industry, medical devices and
semiconductors as well as in golf clubs, sunglasses, home PCs and
calculators Jean Todt's reaction didn't come without a reason.
Allegedly, the Frenchman failed to secure an exclusive
supply of the desirable metal.

F1.rete.it April 1999
It is speculated that the Ferrari team recently tested an engine
incorporating cylinder linings made from aluminium beryllium at their
last testing session at Jerez. Ferrari didn't disclose any information,
but sources indicated that the engine failed on the first lap
.In light
of the above it is furthermore speculated that the Ferrari team will
make use of a modified engine in this weekend's race at Imola, although
at this stage it is thought that they only plan to use it in the
qualifying session.

The 050: The 2001 Ferrari Engine
by Joel Wilkens
The concept that now serves as the basis for the 050 was conceived
nearly three years ago, an idea meant to counter the aluminium-beryllium
engine of McLaren.
Eventually, the development team had to concede - they would use
aluminium-beryllium. While this package has served the Scuderia well,
the January 1st 2001 ban on certain types of materials, which includes
aluminium-beryllium, effectively discards the 049 engine. This ban
coincides, coincidentally, with the finalization in research and testing
that the engine development team has carried out in order to produce the
next generation V10.

Bbc.co.uk website jan 2002
Newey said the ban on the use of beryllium in engines - which Ferrari
pushed for - had damaged McLaren's chances.

2004 fia press conference.
RON DENNIS: "There is a complete track record, one that goes back well
beyond tyres, on teams who managed to obtain a completely correct and
legal advantage only to find that advantage is removed. Beryllium is one
of the examples, I won't go into all the details of the Beryllium story
but I can tell you that to actually process pistons in such an exotic
material is very technically challenging, it requires very careful
control of the machining process because it is a carcinogenic material,
but once actually manufactured it has no danger whatsoever to anybody
that is handling it or processing it or using it in a Grand Prix engine.
And when we were using Beryllium very successfully there was no reason
why we should not have been able to continue using what was a very good
technical advantage coming out of months and months of research and a
great amount of funding."

Nuo savuthan on kohta mersun luokkaa.
