SPORTING REGULATIONS: the GP2 Series wants good racing.
A maximum field of 15 teams (30 cars).
Races will be approximately 200km in length.
Mandatory tyre changes during the race.
The points system will be similar to that used in F1.
Testing limited to 7 two-day sessions per year.
Limited tyre usage: maximum of 4 sets per race-weekend per car, and 4 sets per car for each two-day test session.
A bonus of ONE MILLION EUROS will be shared between the competitors.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
CHASSIS: designed, produced and assembled by Dallara,
on a similar concept to Formula 1.
Carbon-fibre monocoque.
Wheelbase of 3,050 mm, width of 1,800mm.
Aerodynamics designed to encourage overtaking, with special front wing design.
Electronic ‘fly by wire’ throttle.
Weight: 585 kg, without driver or fuel.
ENGINE: designed by Renault, produced and assembled by Mécachrome,
favouring power and reliability.
V8 of 4-litre capacity.
600bhp at 9,500 rpm.
Rebuilds every 4,500 km.
8 into 1 single exit exhausts.
6-speed Mécachrome semi-automatic gearbox, with Mécachrome- designed steering-wheel shift-paddles, exclusive to the GP2 series.
TYRES: the F1 connection.
Supplied exclusively by Bridgestone.
Technology (structure, compounds) inspired by F1.
Four grooves front and rear.
Identical dimensions to F1.
Furthermore, the GP2 series organisers will present to the overall winning driver of the category a sum of US$100,000 which is to be known as the “Bridgestone Prize”.
SAFETY: the car will meet the FIA standards for Formula 1.
Rear, frontal and lateral crash tests.
Impact test on the steering column.
Static load tests on the roll hoop, and frontal, rear and side structures.
Rapid-extraction seat.
Wheel tethers.
Mandatory use of HANS system.
KEY DATES
The shakedown of the first GP2 series chassis is planned around 20 July 2004. This will be followed by 20 days of development, all at the Circuit Paul Ricard, between 21 July and October.
