F1 runner-up Kimi Raikkonen could soon surpass Michael Schumacher as the sport's highest earner, according to a report in BusinessF1 magazine.
The publication is predicting that by 2006, the 24-year-old Finn will earn nearly $70 million from employers McLaren-Mercedes.
An article continues that on a 5-year stint with Ron Dennis' team, KR will earn a total of $134 million, with only the first $64m coming between '02 and '05.
Raikkonen currently earns about $8 million a year, according to sources. Michael Schumacher is presently the highest-paid superstar in Formula One, the German on an annual salary of around $35 million, ahead of brother Ralf ($12m).
Kimi's McLaren team-mate David Coulthard and BMW-Williams star Juan Pablo Montoya earn about the same money as Raikkonen, BusinessF1 continues.
Raikkonen could, however, find himself in an even better bargaining position in looming years if Scuderia Ferrari, as expected, eventually make him an offer. 'Some of his performances towards the end of the season in a car getting old were very impressive,' said the scarlet team's technical director Ross Brawn.
Brawn added: 'Under pressure he does not make many mistakes. Raikkonen is the big star of the future. I think he's the best of the young drivers.'
