This morning dawned cloudy but dry in Shanghai. Soon, however, the clouds rolled in, turning the skies overcast. By 11 o'clock the first spots of moisture were evident.

Since then, conditions have deteriorated, with light rain falling in the last hour. The track surface is damp as we begin our coverage this afternoon, with further rain expected during the course of the race.

Temperatures will remain warm thanks to a strong south-westerly wind with a maximum of 21 degrees Celsius. Track temperatures will suffer today in the damp conditions, failing to reach anywhere near the high thirties we saw yesterday.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Shanghai for the all-important weather update : "A warm wind is blowing through Shanghai on race day at the Chinese Grand Prix. By mid-morning spots of rain ominously began hitting the window - could the weather have a say in how the race is run?"

Bahrainissa on Huhtikuussa keskimäärin yksi kostea(+0,25mm) päivä ja toukokuussa ei yhtäkään, joten olisi pieni ihme, jos viikonlopun aikana nähtäisiin edes sadepilven näköisiä hattaroita taivaalla. Päivän keskilämpötilat siellä 30 asteen tietämillä.

Kuivaa ja kuumaa siis luvassa, kuten aiempinakin vuosina.

Siellä on vuodessa keskimäärin alle kymmenen sadepäivää vuodessa. Mitäs täällä mahtaa olla, sata?

No joo, en itsekään usko että viikonloppuna sataa. Eikä näihin alkuviikon ennustuksiin ole muutenkaan niin älyttömästi vielä luottamista, kuten viime viikollakin nähtiin.

After two very wet grands prix, the journey to the Middle East will have given the teams chance to dry out. Surely the sport will enjoy a fair-weather weekend in the land of guaranteed sunshine this weekend? Yes, of course it will ...

In fact, we will move to the other extreme with dry air, low humidity and fierce heat.

Friday is tipped to be the hottest of the three days, with temperatures soaring to around 35 degrees Celsius and wall-to-wall sunshine. Saturday and Sunday could see those values drop slightly to around 33 degrees as conditions turn a little hazy, but there is no chance of rain during the course of the weekend, and we will all get the chance to see a dry race to judge the relative pace of the cars after a month of developments.

We will take a further look at the weather for the weekend on Thursday, but the news is to expect a dry, hot weekend with little chance of that changing.

Autosport uskoo kuivahkoon viikonloppuun, mutta sunnuntai on Kiinan lailla vielä tässä vaiheessa epävarma sään osalta:

--- Currently, the rain threat across the race meeting is minimal, with weather model forecasts suggesting that the high will hang on over eastern Spain long enough to give Catalonia a mainly dry weekend.

Friday should be warm and mainly sunny, with temperatures around 23 degrees. Saturday will see the effect of the high pressure becoming less dominant, with more in the way of cloud cover and an outside chance of some rain in the evening.

Sunday's prospects are less certain at the moment and the forecasts will update by incorporating the latest observations over the coming days.

It is a similar scenario to the original Monday pre-Chinese Grand Prix forecast, as we wait to see whether the high pressure (pleasant conditions) or the developing low to the north in France (bringing rain) wins the day. As a result, mainstream weather forecasts are expected to vary over the next couple of days, as far as Sunday is concerned.

Throughout the rest of today - and indeed tomorrow - the weather is expected to remain stable, with rain staying away to the north and west and dry conditions prevailing as the high pressure area that we have talked about this week hangs on in the Catalonia region.

With the high now beginning to slip away to the south, slightly cooler air will filter down from the north-west. Temperatures will be a degree or two down on today's maximum, at around 20 Celsius.

At the beginning of the week we mentioned the chance of some light rain on Saturday evening. This prediction has increased in significance over the last 24 hours.

Rain is possible in to the early hours of Sunday morning. A batch of showers is likely to sweep north, along the Catalan coastline, and is forecast to end around dawn on race day.

Conditions are then expected to clear up somewhat, with the race taking place under dry but mainly cloudy skies. The movement and projected timing of the overnight rain is not a cause for concern - yet - and the latest forecast model data still calls for a dry race.

By dawn, the is circuit predicted to be experiencing the heaviest of any showers, with the latest weather models - published shortly before qualifying - predicting that the band of wet weather should move away from the area a few hours before the start of the grand prix.

Model forecasts can only take us so far, and now the detail provided by the latest satellite images and rainfall radar will allow us to keep track of the morning rain as it passes through the region. ---
