MAD! Microsoft flight simulator 2004
After a mad day I have still not been able to get Microsoft flight sim 2004 working.
I have spent 4 hours to technical support no luck
installed every driver under the sun... direct x 9.. etc
(once youve gone through this a million times you get the drift)
the program hangs (i have to "end task") just after the intro screen pops up and just after the disk check.
I can run fs2002 with no probs
Reinstalled XP
Used the "safedisk patch" on microsoft website.
Specs below
if anyone else has been having this problem let me know please as it looks like it can only be a bug.
specs:
AMD 2000+
512 mb pc2100 ram
geforce 4 ti 4200
audigy 1
LG cd writer
MSI kt3 ultra (via apollo)
Never had this prob with any other games.

Turn off all eye candy (with Nvidia's drivers), see if that helps, Turn down or off Hardware Acceleration (for graphics in windows), and run dxdaig from the START>RUN menu and run the 3D tests so that we might isolate the problem, don't forget your sound drivers.

The game can run in software mode and still wont start, all eye candy has been of, and as for sound drivers, I have now tested with 2 different cards as well.
What I fear is another Via motherboard problem connected with the safedisk software.
I am gutted, I was really looking fowared to playing this I could persue it but its gotta be a patch im sure, considering the game also has a safe mode so grafix drivers wont be required.

And you have the latest VIA drivers?
Oh, and check your monitor and refresh rates, try 60 85 100 at the same resolution as the game starts if possible. (just for a try)

Start, Run, type services.msc
Scroll down the Nvidia Driver Helper Service, right click, click properties, Startup Type - change to Disabled.
See if that helps. That service always caused me problems in games.

FS 2004 Problems
I upgraded my machine on the 6th Aug to the following:-
Athlon 2800XP CPU
GA-7NNXP Mobo
1.5gig ram
Creative 5900 Ultra with 256mb video memory
40 gig HD (System)
200 gig HD for FS2004 and other stuff
Fresh Install of XP Pro
All Windows Updates
Latest Nvidia drivers
I tried to install 2004 and a couple of times it said I had a low swap space or a corrupt .cab file.
I finally got it to install and decompress and it reported this was done successfully,but when I go to actually fly,it says that it can not find a scenery file. Like others I also get a black square where the control panel should be.
I am not impressed, but am open to suggestions...

I've just been having the same problem as Her Own Pride and I've been running P3 1.5 with an ATI Radeon 7000 Series. I've done everything the troubleshooting has said to . . . update drivers, reduce "eye candy", test drivers . . . blah blah blah.
Essentially I've wasted my money, a couple hours of my time, and just had to go back and reset all of my settings.
Is this another example of MS Engineering? Or is there some quick yet archaic solution to my growing dissappointment.

I had the exact same problem and fixed it by reinstalling WinXP. Now I must say that I tried everything under the sun and figured the problem was with Windows. However originally I was using a cracked copy of XP and decided to buy a legit version when I ran into this problem. . I suspect there was some fix in one of the Windows updates and since I couldnt get the updates with the crack, I decided to get the real deal. After reinstalling and getting the latest XP updates, FS2004 ran fine. Who knows, it could be a way to thwart people without legitimate copies of XP
I am still having a problem with sound however. The ATC voices and motor sounds get very low (pitch) and slow, and I have to repeatedly press "Alt" and "q" to get the normal sounds back. Its really annoying.

FS2004 has major problems!
I have just spent three days trying to get FS9 working (including hours on the phone to Microsoft - they refuse to acknowledge that they have a problem).
I too have loaded every driver, sound, graphics, DirectX 9.0b, USB, uninstalled, re-installed and basically have exhausted every possibility. Tried every resolution, refresh rate under the sun. My machine was a 2.8 Ghz, 1 meg ram, NVidia Gr Force Ti 4600 etc., running XP Professional.
I finally went out and bought an even better machine, with a 256mb Nvidia card, totally different motherboard, AGP 8X.
Absolutely useless!! - Flight Simulator 2004 still hangs when hitting the ALT key, hangs on the splash (intro) screen, fails to display the cockpit panels. Microsoft have managed to cost me over a £1,000 for a £47 piece of incomplete and undertested software, reminiscent of FS 2000 days. They will definately need a patch and soon (once they admit to the flood of complaints).
I'll probably go back to FS2002 until they sort the problem.

Ur problem is the REFRESH in winXP to fix this download a refresh rate fix or using the sittings in Nvidia driver menu override the refresh rates to the max values. Also RivaTuner is a great tool to do that.
