MotoGP boss joins series
Kovalainen signs up with new-look squad
Double motorbike world champion and MotoGP team principal Sito Pons has confirmed he will field a two-car team in the World Series by Nissan single-seater series.
Pons will develop this new project, alongside his Camel Honda 500cc MotoGP team, in association with Jesus Sanchez, former technical director of Gabord Competicion. Sanchez worked as a technician with Pons in bikes between 1984 and 1988.
Pons Racing has also reached a deal with the Renault F1 Driver Development Programme (RDD), so that Heikki Kovalainen will drive for the team in 2004. The 21-year old Finn was runner-up in the series last year to Renault test driver Franck Montagny.
"Worldwide interest in Formula 1 and motor racing in general has never been higher," said Pons. "The World Series by Nissan is ideally positioned, as not only is it generating increasing commercial interest, particularly now that visits China for the first time this season, it is also rapidly becoming the point of reference for drivers making the move into F1."
Sito starts a new project that will take him to Formula 1
Jaime Alguersuari
Jaime Alguersuari, president of series organiser RPM Racing, said: "The link of Sito Pons with the World Series by Nissan means to us a contribution of invaluable prestige in the high-profile single-seater competition sector. Sito starts a new project that will take him to Formula 1, as a team and as a businessman."
