Formula One to come back to Indy
Chewing on Big Apple plan...
A second race in the future in the USA?
Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone is mulling the mouthwatering prospect of a race between New York City's skyscrapers, but Indianapolis's spot on the world championship rota is secure.
The Indianapolis Star newspaper quoted Ecclestone as saying he had opened preliminary discussions with New York officials about staging a street race in Manhattan.
Ecclestone has also been talking to Long Beach Grand Prix promotor Chris Pook about a return for the California-based race, which disappeared from the Formula One calendar after 1983, the paper said.
The idea of a second Grand Prix in the United States, a practice common in the 1970s and 1980s, has been kicked around among team bosses here all weekend.
Separately, the 74-year-old Formula One boss said Saturday that he would bring the US Grand Prix back to Indianapolis, after the contract with the circuit expires after Sunday's race.
"It's great to be here, and yes, I think it's very important to be in America," Ecclestone said.
Asked whether the Grand Prix would return to the famed Brickyard circuit next year, he said "Yes, why not? They have done a lot of work around here, and its very nice."
Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George reconfiguered the fabled circuit to accomodate a Formula One return to the United States in 2000 after a nine year break, building a traditional road circuit in the infield of the Brickyard oval, as well as a new pagoda and pit lane.
The US Grand Prix was moved this year from late September to June, in a bid to ensure that the championship was not decided by the time Formula One rolled into town, and to avoid a clash with the NFL American Football season. But the sport is still hampered by low visibility in the United States where it lags far behind closed- cockpit National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) and the open-wheel Indy Racing League.
Sunday's Grand Prix will only be carried by a niche motorsport station SPEED channel, and will not be available on any of the big networks or even on one of the cable sports giants, like ESPN.
