6 January, 2004 - Florida-based Champion Racing, one of the most successful racing teams in the U.S., will return in 2004 to compete in the American Le Mans Series, as well as returning to Le Mans to defend their podium finish from the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Founded in 1994 by Dave Maraj, Champion Racing (Pompano Beach, FL) has become a formidable opponent for teams competing in sports car racing. Supported by Audi Sport North America, Champion Racing will seek to earn their first Championship title in the American Le Mans Series.

Team ADT Champion Racing will make a concerted attack on this year’s American Le Mans Series titles having re-signed veteran driver JJ Lehto, the “Flying Finn”, and acquiring factory driver, Marco Werner.

Lehto and Werner will partner for the nine race American Le Mans Series piloting a “customer” based Audi R8 prototype sponsored by ADT, the largest single provider of total security solutions to residential, business and federal customers.

Eli tällä kaudella kaksikkona Lehto ja Werner, pidemmissä kisoissa Sebrigissä ja Lemanssisa kolmantena kuljettajana toimii Emmanuelle Pirro.

Jokohan tällä kaudella vihdoin mestaruus tulisi, ei kuitenkaan JJ:llä enää montaa vuotta jäljellä. Nyt kun ei Lemansissa pitäisi olla mitään Audia nopeampaa autoa mukana, niin mahdollisuudet kyseisen kisan voittoonkin ovat.

Miami ja Trois-Riviers pois. Lime Rock, Portland ja Mid Ohio palaavat sarjaan. Miami ei nyt ollutkaan mikään erikoinen rata. Lime Rock ei erityisen tuttu ole, aikoinaan Sports Car GT pc-pelissä sitä ajoin, sen perusteella ihan asiallinen rata. Ilmeisesti suhteellisen tunnettu Pohjois-Amerikan kilpasarjoja seuraavien keskuudessa.

Mielestäni Jykän jatkaminen ALMS:ssa on hyvä asia. Se on kuitenkin oikeaa kilpa-autoilua ja miehen kyvytä pääsee hyvin esille. Sinänsä urheiluautopuolella pärjää hyvin 10 vuotta vanhemmatkin kuskit, joten on Jykällä vielä vuosia jäljellä uraa.

Audi UK Announces Second Entry for Sebring

Smith will contest the Le Mans 24 Hours, inaugural Le Mans Endurance Series, and the Sebring 12 Hour race in an Audi R8 with previously announced driver Jamie Davies, from Yeovil.

Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx hopes to announce later this month, the final two drivers who will join Smith, Davies, triple Le Mans winner Frank Biela and fellow German Pierre Kaffer, in their quest for Le Mans glory with the British Audi team.

Ei ainakaan ensimmäisessä ALMS-sarjan kisassa Lehto/Werner/Pirro pääse helpolla, kun Audi UK tulee kahdella autolla mukaan. Ilmeisesti myös Champion Audilla on toinen R8, mutta taitaa olla kustannuskysymys tuoda sitä kisoihin mukaan.

Lemansiin Championin ja Audi Uk:n lisäksi ainakin japanilaisella GOH-Audilla on R8.

Kyllähän iän puolesta Lehto vois jatkaa, mut jotenkin muistelen miehen haastatteluista sen ettei kiinnostusta paljoa yli neljäkymppisenä ajamiseen olisi.

Tiedä sitten, mikä on lopullinen totuus, mutta juurikin noin Jykä on aiemmin asiasta kysyttäessä haastellut.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to Drive Corvette in American Le Mans Series Event at Infineon Raceway

Dale Earnhardt, Jr., winner of the 2004 Daytona 500 and one of the biggest stars in NASCAR racing, will bring his skills to a different form of the sport when he drives a Corvette in the July 18 American Le Mans Series event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Eli Dale laajentaa valikoimaansa kestävyyskisojen suuntaan, kauden alussa mies oli mukana Daytonan 24h kisassa ja nyt sitten Corvetella. Hän ei mene kenenkään tilalle, vaan Corvette ajattaa kolmatta autoa, Dalen kanssa auton jakaa kokenut kisakuski Boris Said.

LAMBORGHINI TO ENTER AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES

Lamborghini, a name that represents glamour, excitement, speed and raw power in the automotive world, will enter professional sports car racing competition in the American Le Mans Series this season with the newly-created Krohn-Barbour Racing team.

Tosi hieno uutinen saada tunnettu merkki mukaan, GTS-luokkaan lisää ohjelmaa sekoittamaan pakkaa. Tosin Sebringin perusteella Corvetella on etumatkaa muihin.

DALE EARNHARDT JR TESTS AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES CHEVY CORVETTE

Dale Earnhardt, Jr., was introduced to the American Le Mans Series version of the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R race car in a test session on Wednesday and the NASCAR superstar was more than impressed.

“Man, the tires and brakes are amazing,” said Earnhardt after the test. “The brakes are 10 times better than when I drove the car before. The other series didn’t allow carbon brakes, so this is the first time I’ve ever had a chance to run on them. There is a huge learning curve but once I got the hang of it, it was great. Ron and Boris helped me out to figure how to squeeze the brake pedal.”

I like sports car racing because the equipment is so advanced,” he said. “The Corvette C5-R is such a capable race car and, above all, it’s fun to drive.

Do you recall any humorous moments that have come out of the driver meetings?

“Well, I always ask the drivers if anyone has any questions, and in 2001, we were racing at Texas Motor Speedway. JJ Lehto had been driving in prototypes, and he had a bit of a reputation at the time, as a prototype driver, of concentrating only on his race and not on anyone else, especially the guys running GT. But this time, JJ was driving GT. So, when I asked for questions, JJ raised his hand, and, with a straight face said, ‘Marty, what are you going to do about the prototype drivers today?’

Edellistä Mid-Ohion kisaa tuli juhannuksesta johtuen seurattua hieman heikosti, nyt onkin jo vuorossa Lime Rock.

Äsken päättyivät viimeiset harjoitukset ennen aika-ajoja, Lehto toisena 0,4 sekuntia nopeinta Lolaa perässä.

ilmeisesti 21:35 alkaa sitten GT ja GTS-luokkien aika-ajot. Harjoituksissa Corvettet ja Saleen ovat olleen tosi tasaisia, Lamborghini ei meinaa pysyä perässä.

Lime Rock Park Qualifying - Lehto Qualifies on Front Row

Team ADT Champion Racing will start from the front row for the inaugural New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. JJ Lehto found his fastest time (48:134) early in qualifying and then parked the #38 Audi R8 to preserve the tires for Monday's 2:45 minutes race.

The Dyson team, strongest competitors to Champion Racing, has the hometown "advantage" as the team's race shop is less than an hour's drive from the track. For Team ADT Champion Racing, it couldn't be more opposite. This is the first time both drivers, JJ Lehto and Marco Werner, have driven the 1.54-mile circuit. It's also the first time an Audi R8 has raced on the short and bumpy circuit.

JJ Lehto (Finland): "We had a little bit of a hectic morning because we had a leak on the radiator and spent some time fixing that. We changed the car a lot after the first practice yesterday and we kind of liked it in a way but then there were some other things we didn't like so we went back to set-ups. Qualifying was the maximum effort for us. I was able to do a couple of similar lap times but I couldn't gain or improve so I thought I would come in and save the tires."
