September 30, 1995 - 21 Years Ago Today: Mariah Carey debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and began an eight-week run with her single, "Fantasy." This was the second single to debut at No. 1 following Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" and the first single to debut at the top by a female artist. The single was Carey's 9th No. 1 single and it also enjoyed a 6-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Chart. It was the leadoff single from her 5th studio album, "Daydream," and was the first of 4 Top Tens and 3 No. 1's from the album which also produced, "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men, which is the longest-running No. 1 single in history logging in with 16 weeks at No. 1. The third consecutive No. 1 from the album, "Always Be My Baby," spent 2 weeks at No. 1 and the 4th Hot 100 single, "Forever," peaked at No. 9. "Fantasy" was written by Mariah Carey, Dave Hall, Adrian Belew, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Steven Stanley and was certified double-Platinum. Mariah Carey held down the No.'s 1 and 2 Hot 100 singles of 1995. Carey is tied in 2nd place with Elvis Presley for the 2nd most No. 1's with 18 chart-topppers each. The Beatles hold down the No. 1 position with 20 chart-toppers.
I remember the night someone handed me a Mariah Carey record to autograph. it was after a Krimson concert in Chicago. I stared back blankly and said, "why would I sign this?" the answer was "because it's the number 1 single in the country and you co-wrote it!"
I had no idea! I still have never even met Mariah Carey. crazy music business!
