McLaren MP4-22
The new MP4-22 will have the cockpit lower, according to the demands of the double champion Fernando Alonso, with whose model aims to renew the titles obtained in 2005 and 2006.
The chassis department that is manufacturing the new MP4-22 works 24 hours to finish the first cars that Alonso will be testing in middle January in the McLaren official presentation in Valencia.
The new MP4-22, that started to be designed at the end of 2005 and was finished this last summer, will keep only 5% of the approximately 11,500 pieces.
The new car will have the copkit lower than the MP4-21, as when it has been designed, it has been done taken into account the way of Alonso driving, who signed in December of last year.
The rear wing support also changes, now it will rest in a central support and two lateral ones, similarly to that of the R26, that this year will allowed him to renew the title.
The nose is still keeping very low but the extractors in the lateral sidepods are bigger to channel the air better towards the rear wing, although one of the most radical changes that has been introduced in the new car is the rear diffusor. Aerodynamically, the car is about 95% new compared to the last year car.
McLaren-Mercedes are looking forward to Alonso joining the team on 1st January 07 because the aerodynamic department chief engineers are sure he will contribute with ‘new ideas’.
The new MP4-22 will be presented on 15 January in Valencia and the aerodynamic Engineers are already working in the first evolution that will be ready two weeks later and there are expected changes for the seventh and eighth weeks of the year, which is the way Engineers counts the time.
