Rising Finn Toni Gardemeister is looking increasingly set to be the lead driver at Ford next year, as speculation intensifies as to who will drive the team’s two cars next year. Spaniard Daniel Sola has also been hotly tipped to join the team for 2005.
Gardemeister, who has driven for Skoda for the last three years, has impressed at times this season in comparison to experienced team-mate Armin Schwarz and finished in the points in Finland and Germany. Gardemeister will be keen to move to a front-running team for 2005, but is still in discussions with Skoda according to the Finn’s manager.
Sola, who won the 2002 Junior World Rally Championship title has spent the last two seasons driving a Mitsubishi in the Group N Production WRC class, but finished in the points on one of his few outings in the Japanese marque’s Lancer WRC car in his home round in Spain. He has backing, which could help his chances as Ford is understood to be keen to run drivers who would bring budget to the team.
Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson admitted in this week’s Motorsport News that Gardemeister was one of the drivers on his list, but admitted that numerous drivers had been in contact with the team.
